Events/Announcements January 2009 Askew School Awards Ceremony On January 30, 2009, the Askew School held their annual awards ceremony. A number of faculty, alumni, students and their families attended this spectacular event. The annual Askew Awards Ceremony was held at the University Center 's Miller Hall from 5:30-8:00p. We began the evening with a nice reception filled with delicious food. Immediately following the reception, Dr. Frances Berry welcomed everyone to the awards ceremony and she later introduced Governor Askew to say a couple of remarks to the faculty, students, and guests. The night continued with Professor Kaifeng Yang presenting the Malcolm Parsons Award (MPA Best Paper) to Jared Bondesson, Deshawn Byrd, and Kelly Hensley . The title of their essay was “Web 2.0 Utilization by Leon County Non-Profits: A Qualitative Study.” Soon after, Dr. Kaifeng Yang presented the Pi Alpha Alpha Best Action Report to Helen Pflugh. Her paper was titled, "Healthy Communities, Healthy People Initiative: An Analysis of Accountability Options." Professor Ralph Brower along with Adrian Buckland presented the Raul DeGuzman Award (Ph.D. Best Paper) to Cheon Geun Choi. His paper was titled, “Explaining Police Performance: What Management and What Performance?” The Pi Alpha Alpha inductees were announced by Professor Kaifeng Yang. Pi Alpha Alpha is a Public Administration National Honor Society for individuals who exemplify outstanding academic achievement. The inductees of this prestigious honor were Aisha Azhar, Kaiju Chang, Ssu-hsein Chen, Brett Constable, Matthew Dunagen, Kai-jo Fu, Kelly Hensley, Bo Hyon Jang, Paige Johnson, Kathleen Mears, Jennifer McBride, David Ryan Miller, Leah Speight, Christian Summers, Jessica Terman, and Angela Williamson. Professor Rick Feiock announced the competitors and winner of the Natalia Trogen Poster Competition. The poster competitors included four MPA and four Ph.D. students, listed respectively: Jared Bondesson, Deborah Burr, Deshawn Byrd, Kelly Hensley, Aisha Azhar, Jungah Bae, Bruce McDonald, and Jungwon Park. A couple of faculty members judged the poster competition. All participants did a marvelous job! The winner of the Natasha Trogen Award was Bruce McDonald. His poster was titled, "Outweighing the Cost of Sanctions: A Case Study of the Islamic Republic of Iran." Frances Cox, the daughter of Ruth “Sweetie” Cox, along with Audrey Heffron, Director of Florida Public Affairs Center, presented the Ruth “Sweetie” Cox Scholarship to Youngmi Lee. The Ruth "Sweetie" Cox Dissertation Award is presented annually to an Askew School doctoral student in support of research or activities related to the completion of their dissertation. Dr Frances Berry presented the Service to the Askew School Award to Adrian Buckland, for all of his contributions to the faculty and students. In closing, Dr. Berry thanked everyone for coming to this wonderful event to help celebrate the achievements of the students.
